No home remedy here replaces treatment, and none is talked down. What has done good for generations does good — even if no one ever measured it. Where something is well studied, it says so. Where it is only experience, it says that too.

What you do

Apply diluted peppermint oil thinly to temples and neck, repeat after an hour if needed. Keep away from the eyes.

Why it is plausible

Menthol creates a cold sensation that overlays pain perception. For tension headache the effect has been studied several times.

What it cannot do

For migraine with nausea and light sensitivity it is usually too weak.

When to leave it

Never on the face or chest of infants and toddlers — menthol can cause breathing to stop. Not on broken skin, not in the eyes.

Get seen at once: the sudden, worst headache of your life, headache with fever and a stiff neck, with weakness, speech or vision trouble. Likewise dizziness with double vision or an unsteady gait. Sleeplessness over weeks with loss of drive is something to discuss, not to endure.
