♨️ Period pain: ginger

No home remedy here replaces treatment, and none is talked down. What has done good for generations does good — even if no one ever measured it. Where something is well studied, it says so. Where it is only experience, it says that too.

What you do

Pour a cup of boiling water over a teaspoon of freshly grated ginger and let it steep covered for ten minutes. Three or four cups a day, starting the day before the bleeding or on the first day. As powder the studied amounts run from 750 to 2000 mg a day, split into three doses. The hot water bottle goes with it — it has a card of its own.

Why it is plausible

The pain arises because the womb contracts and in doing so throttles its own blood supply. Prostaglandins steer that — the very messengers the common painkillers act on. Ginger attacks at the same point: gingerol and shogaol block the enzymes that form prostaglandins. Reviews of several small trials find, for 750 to 2000 mg of powder in the first days, relief clearly above dummy treatment. So the route is not merely plausible, it is the same one the medicine takes — only weaker.

What it cannot do

Ginger can burn with a sensitive stomach; take it with food then, or take less. In larger amounts it slows clotting, which should be mentioned alongside blood thinners and before an operation. The effect is not immediate — starting at the first cramp is too late; the day before is the better moment.

When to leave it

If the pain is suddenly different from usual, if it comes outside the bleeding, with fever, with very heavy bleeding, when painkillers and warmth no longer suffice, and when period pain starts only after years of untroubled cycles — that last is a sign in its own right and no small matter.

When it is no longer a home remedy

When it is no longer a home remedy

Have it assessed: bleeding outside the cycle or after the menopause, strong one-sided lower abdominal pain, fever with discharge, any new lump in the breast. In pregnancy almost anything is a reason to call. With mastitis and fever, do not wait longer than a day.
