No home remedy here replaces treatment, and none is talked down. What has done good for generations does good — even if no one ever measured it. Where something is well studied, it says so. Where it is only experience, it says that too.

What you do

Lightly crush a teaspoon of the seeds, pour over hot water, cover and steep for ten minutes.

Why it is plausible

The essential oils relax the gut muscle and help gas escape. Covering while steeping is decisive, otherwise exactly those oils evaporate.

What it cannot do

Persistent bloating with weight loss or changed stools needs assessment, not tea.

When to leave it

Anise and fennel in large amounts are not recommended in pregnancy and breastfeeding; usual tea amounts are considered unproblematic.

When it is no longer a home remedy

When it is no longer a home remedy

Do not treat yourself: strong, increasing or suddenly starting abdominal pain, a hard belly, blood in the stool or black stool, vomiting blood. With diarrhoea it is fluid loss that counts — dry tongue, little urine, drowsiness. In children and older people this happens faster.
