🚶 Walking for constipation

No home remedy here replaces treatment, and none is talked down. What has done good for generations does good — even if no one ever measured it. Where something is well studied, it says so. Where it is only experience, it says that too.

What you do

Walk ten to fifteen minutes two or three times a day, plus a large glass of lukewarm water in the morning.

Why it is plausible

Movement stimulates bowel activity, and the reflex is strongest after getting up and after eating — that is when a trip to the toilet pays off.

What it cannot do

Movement alone is not enough with stubborn constipation; fibre and fluid belong to it.

When to leave it

With sudden constipation plus vomiting, a distended belly or no wind passing, do not wait — that is an emergency.

When it is no longer a home remedy

When it is no longer a home remedy

Do not treat yourself: strong, increasing or suddenly starting abdominal pain, a hard belly, blood in the stool or black stool, vomiting blood. With diarrhoea it is fluid loss that counts — dry tongue, little urine, drowsiness. In children and older people this happens faster.
