😬 Grinding and clenching

No home remedy here replaces treatment, and none is talked down. What has done good for generations does good — even if no one ever measured it. Where something is well studied, it says so. Where it is only experience, it says that too.

What you do

Check several times a day: are the teeth touching? Then tongue to the palate, teeth apart, jaw loose. Warmth on the chewing muscles in the evening, no chewing gum.

Why it is plausible

At rest the teeth normally do not touch. Relearning that during the day often reduces night-time clenching too.

What it cannot do

Night grinding cannot be trained away. A splint protects the teeth, it does not stop the grinding.

When to leave it

With jaw joint pain, limited opening, clicking with locking or worn-down teeth, see the dentist.

When it is no longer a home remedy

When it is no longer a home remedy

To the doctor or dentist: facial swelling with fever, toothache with trouble opening the mouth, a knocked-out tooth — that is an emergency with a short window. For the eye: sudden loss of vision, severe pain, flashes of light. Sore places in the mouth lasting beyond three weeks.
