No home remedy here replaces treatment, and none is talked down. What has done good for generations does good — even if no one ever measured it. Where something is well studied, it says so. Where it is only experience, it says that too.

What you do

Boiled or sealed water, no ice cubes, peel fruit yourself, eat cooked food hot. Wash hands before every meal — including after handling banknotes.

Why it is plausible

Most germs arrive via water and raw food washed in water. What is still steaming has had no time to be colonised.

What it cannot do

It lowers the risk, it does not remove it. And the most important measure is not prevention but drinking if it happens anyway.

When to leave it

With fever, blood in the stool, severe abdominal pain or signs of dehydration, get medical help — even while travelling.

When it is no longer a home remedy

When it is no longer a home remedy

Have it assessed: heat with confusion, dry hot skin or clouded consciousness — that is more than exhaustion. A one-sided swollen leg after a long journey. And anything new that does not go away within a few days.
