No home remedy here replaces treatment, and none is talked down. What has done good for generations does good — even if no one ever measured it. Where something is well studied, it says so. Where it is only experience, it says that too.
Blink on purpose — ten full blinks every few minutes. Put the screen below eye level, humidify the air, steer draughts and fans away from the face. A warm compress on the closed lids for five minutes.
At a screen you blink far less often and often incompletely, so the tear film breaks up. A lower screen also reduces the exposed eye surface.
Preservative-free drops help as well but do not fix the cause. And dry eyes can water — that is not a contradiction.
With pain, light sensitivity, suddenly blurred vision or a red eye with worsening sight, do not self-treat.
To the doctor or dentist: facial swelling with fever, toothache with trouble opening the mouth, a knocked-out tooth — that is an emergency with a short window. For the eye: sudden loss of vision, severe pain, flashes of light. Sore places in the mouth lasting beyond three weeks.
