🤫 Rest the voice

No home remedy here replaces treatment, and none is talked down. What has done good for generations does good — even if no one ever measured it. Where something is well studied, it says so. Where it is only experience, it says that too.

What you do

With hoarseness speak normally but little; do not whisper, avoid throat clearing, drink plenty.

Why it is plausible

Whispering presses the vocal cords together harder than speaking softly — it does not spare them, it strains them. Throat clearing irritates further.

What it cannot do

Resting does not heal inflammation, it only prevents additional damage.

When to leave it

Hoarseness lasting over three weeks needs examining, especially in smokers — regardless of how well the voice was rested.

When it is no longer a home remedy

When it is no longer a home remedy

Get seen at once: severe one-sided pain with high fever, trouble swallowing your own saliva, a muffled voice or breathlessness. Likewise hoarseness lasting beyond three weeks, and coughing blood. In children also drooling and sitting with the chin pushed forward.
