🔇 Protecting the ears before it gets too loud

No home remedy here replaces treatment, and none is talked down. What has done good for generations does good — even if no one ever measured it. Where something is well studied, it says so. Where it is only experience, it says that too.

What you do

At concerts, with machines or drills, wear plugs — put them in beforehand, not once it already hurts. Keep distance from the source and take breaks in quiet.

Why it is plausible

Noise damage in the inner ear comes from loudness times duration and does not reverse. One metre more distance markedly halves the energy arriving.

What it cannot do

Plugs do not make you deaf to music — good filter plugs damp evenly, cheap foam plugs mainly take away the highs.

When to leave it

Ringing or muffled hearing after noise that is still there the next morning needs assessing within days.

When it is no longer a home remedy

When it is no longer a home remedy

Have it assessed: heat with confusion, dry hot skin or clouded consciousness — that is more than exhaustion. A one-sided swollen leg after a long journey. And anything new that does not go away within a few days.
