Home remedies · Colds, nose & fever
No home remedy here replaces treatment, and none is talked down. What has done good for generations does good — even if no one ever measured it. Where something is well studied, it says so. Where it is only experience, it says that too.
Place a cherry stone cushion or a warm compress at hand warmth for 15 to 20 minutes, with the head raised when lying down.
Warmth relaxes and distracts from the throbbing pressure; the raised position slightly lowers pressure in the middle ear.
It does not treat a middle ear infection — that is judged by the course and the examination.
Put nothing in the ear while it is unclear whether the eardrum is intact — no oil, no onion, no drops. With discharge, fever, swelling behind the ear or in infants see a doctor at once.
Have it assessed: fever beyond three days without improvement or rising again, breathlessness, pain on breathing, confusion. In infants under three months any fever is a reason. Also a nosebleed that has not stopped after twenty minutes of correct pressure.
