🩸 Stopping a nosebleed properly

No home remedy here replaces treatment, and none is talked down. What has done good for generations does good — even if no one ever measured it. Where something is well studied, it says so. Where it is only experience, it says that too.

What you do

Sit upright, tilt the head slightly forward, pinch the soft part of the nose firmly for 10 to 15 minutes without letting go.

Why it is plausible

Almost all bleeds come from a plexus at the front of the septum. That is exactly where the grip presses. The head forward stops blood running into the throat.

What it cannot do

Checking in between whether it has stopped resets the clock — that is the most common mistake.

When to leave it

Do not tip the head back. No cotton wool packing that tears it open again on removal. With blood thinners, after a fall on the head, or if it has not stopped after 20 minutes: see a doctor.

When it is no longer a home remedy

When it is no longer a home remedy

Have it assessed: fever beyond three days without improvement or rising again, breathlessness, pain on breathing, confusion. In infants under three months any fever is a reason. Also a nosebleed that has not stopped after twenty minutes of correct pressure.
