No home remedy here replaces treatment, and none is talked down. What has done good for generations does good — even if no one ever measured it. Where something is well studied, it says so. Where it is only experience, it says that too.

What you do

Warm before feeding, feed often with the baby’s chin pointing towards the hard spot, cool afterwards.

Why it is plausible

Warmth opens, emptying clears the block, cold then takes the swelling. The baby’s chin points to where the suction is strongest.

What it cannot do

Weaning is rarely necessary with a blockage and usually makes it worse.

When to leave it

With fever, shivering, a red area or no improvement after 24 hours get it looked at. The breast is not massaged or kneaded vigorously — that damages the tissue.

When it is no longer a home remedy

When it is no longer a home remedy

Have it assessed: bleeding outside the cycle or after the menopause, strong one-sided lower abdominal pain, fever with discharge, any new lump in the breast. In pregnancy almost anything is a reason to call. With mastitis and fever, do not wait longer than a day.
