No home remedy here replaces treatment, and none is talked down. What has done good for generations does good — even if no one ever measured it. Where something is well studied, it says so. Where it is only experience, it says that too.

What you do

Keep sugar-free lozenges, sage sweets or a piece of ginger in the mouth, several times a day as needed.

Why it is plausible

Sucking stimulates saliva, and saliva is the natural protective film of the throat.

What it cannot do

The effect lasts as long as the sucking does.

When to leave it

Not for small children because of choking. Sugary sweets spread over the day harm the teeth.

When it is no longer a home remedy

When it is no longer a home remedy

Get seen at once: severe one-sided pain with high fever, trouble swallowing your own saliva, a muffled voice or breathlessness. Likewise hoarseness lasting beyond three weeks, and coughing blood. In children also drooling and sitting with the chin pushed forward.
