🧊 Cooling from outside for toothache

No home remedy here replaces treatment, and none is talked down. What has done good for generations does good — even if no one ever measured it. Where something is well studied, it says so. Where it is only experience, it says that too.

What you do

Hold a cooled cloth against the cheek from outside for 15 minutes, with breaks; sleep with the head raised.

Why it is plausible

Cold dampens pain and swelling, and the raised position lowers the throbbing pressure.

What it cannot do

Toothache does not heal by itself — the cause sits in the tooth and needs treatment.

When to leave it

No warmth on a swollen cheek, do not place aspirin on the gum — it burns. With swelling reaching the eye or neck, fever or trouble swallowing go to hospital at once.

When it is no longer a home remedy

When it is no longer a home remedy

To the doctor or dentist: facial swelling with fever, toothache with trouble opening the mouth, a knocked-out tooth — that is an emergency with a short window. For the eye: sudden loss of vision, severe pain, flashes of light. Sore places in the mouth lasting beyond three weeks.
