🌙 Itching that gets worse at night

No home remedy here replaces treatment, and none is talked down. What has done good for generations does good — even if no one ever measured it. Where something is well studied, it says so. Where it is only experience, it says that too.

What you do

Shower cool rather than hot in the evening, then moisturise straight away. Keep the bedroom cool, cotton rather than wool, nails short. A cool compress for ten minutes breaks the itch.

Why it is plausible

At night skin temperature rises and distraction falls away — both amplify itching. Coolness and moisture work against both.

What it cannot do

It breaks the itch-scratch cycle but removes no cause. Scratching feels good briefly and worsens the itch afterwards.

When to leave it

Itching all over without a rash, lasting weeks, with weight loss or night sweats, needs assessing.

When it is no longer a home remedy

See a doctor: wounds that gape, bleed heavily or are deep, bite wounds, burns larger than your own palm or with blisters on the face and joints. Likewise redness spreading quickly, especially with fever. And any mole that changes.
