No home remedy here replaces treatment, and none is talked down. What has done good for generations does good — even if no one ever measured it. Where something is well studied, it says so. Where it is only experience, it says that too.

What you do

Hang a cup of fine oat flakes in a cloth in the lukewarm bath water, bathe for 10 to 15 minutes, then only dab dry and moisturise at once.

Why it is plausible

Oats leave a fine film that makes the skin suppler and dampens itching. Moisturising on damp skin locks the water in.

What it cannot do

It does not replace treatment of eczema, but can accompany it pleasantly.

When to leave it

Do not bathe too hot or too long — both dry the skin further. With coeliac disease choose pure oat products.

When it is no longer a home remedy

When it is no longer a home remedy

See a doctor: wounds that gape, bleed heavily or are deep, bite wounds, burns larger than your own palm or with blisters on the face and joints. Likewise redness spreading quickly, especially with fever. And any mole that changes.
