No home remedy here replaces treatment, and none is talked down. What has done good for generations does good — even if no one ever measured it. Where something is well studied, it says so. Where it is only experience, it says that too.

What you do

Avoid spicy, acidic and hard food for a while, rinse with lukewarm salt water or sage tea, use a soft toothbrush.

Why it is plausible

Mouth ulcers heal by themselves in one to two weeks. Everything you do serves to let you eat and speak in the meantime.

What it cannot do

No home remedy demonstrably shortens the healing.

When to leave it

Ulcers larger than a centimetre, lasting more than three weeks, always recurring, or coming with fever and joint pain need assessment — iron, B12 and folate included.

When it is no longer a home remedy

When it is no longer a home remedy

To the doctor or dentist: facial swelling with fever, toothache with trouble opening the mouth, a knocked-out tooth — that is an emergency with a short window. For the eye: sudden loss of vision, severe pain, flashes of light. Sore places in the mouth lasting beyond three weeks.
